How to choose the fire resistance class
Under EN 12101-3, fans are classified by temperature and minimum operating time: F200 — 200 °C / 120 min, F300 — 300 °C / 60 min, F400 — 400 °C / 120 min, F600 — 600 °C / 60 min, F842 — 842 °C / 30 min. A manufacturer may also confirm a longer time: Wolter jet and axial fans of class F300 have been tested for 120 min.
The class is determined by the standards and the fire protection design. What matters is not only the gas temperature at the fan but also the time the system must operate and the place of installation — in the zone being served or in a separate fan room.
What to take into account in the design
- Operating modes. Many fans work in two modes: everyday ventilation at reduced speed and smoke extraction.
- Power supply. Fire-resistant cable lines and a power supply of the first reliability category are required; the safety switch must match the temperature class.
- Frequency inverter. For F300/F400 fans in fire mode, the motor protections and the frequency inverter are bypassed — the manufacturer requires this.
- Redundancy. Two-stage AXG fans keep running on one stage if the other is switched off: according to the manufacturer, approximately 65% of the airflow at about 40% of the power consumption.
