Tunnel and metro fans
Wolter builds fans for longitudinal and transverse ventilation of road tunnels and metros: uni-directional and reversible jet (impulse) fans, and large axial fans for portals and shafts. Fire ratings go up to F400 to EN 12101-3.

Fans in a tunnel work in harsh conditions: the air carries exhaust gases and abrasive particles, and in a fire the equipment must move smoke away from people and support the fire brigade.
Wolter offers two types of tunnel fan:
- jet fans — mounted under the tunnel crown to create a longitudinal flow; available uni-directional and reversible, certified to EN 12101-3 for up to 400 °C over 120 minutes;
- axial portal and shaft fans — large fans up to size 2800 for longitudinal and transverse schemes, certified up to F400.
For corrosive and abrasive tunnel air Wolter uses stainless steels of various grades.

Tunnel ventilation schemes
In a longitudinal scheme, jet fans mounted in groups under the crown push air along the tunnel from portal to portal or towards an exhaust shaft. Transverse and semi-transverse schemes use ventilation ducts and large axial fans in portals and shafts. The scheme is chosen by the design, based on tunnel length, traffic volume and type, cross-section and external conditions. See Tunnel ventilation for more.
What we consider in a selection
- Fire rating. The class and operating time in a fire are set by the codes and the design scenario; Wolter tunnel fans are certified up to F400.
- Reversal. Reversible jet fans allow the flow direction to be chosen according to the fire location.
- Corrosion and abrasion. For aggressive air we choose stainless steel versions.
- Maintenance. Access in an operating tunnel is limited, so secure mounting and easy inspection matter.
Technical data
Wolter’s tunnel fan catalogue is not public, so we request sizes, thrust and versions from the manufacturer for each project. Send us the tunnel parameters and we will prepare a selection and, if needed, CFD modelling.

Frequently asked questions
What fire rating do Wolter tunnel fans have?
Tunnel jet fans are certified to EN 12101-3 for up to 400 °C over 120 minutes; axial tunnel fans are certified up to F400. The required class is set by the design.
Are reversible tunnel fans available?
Yes, tunnel jet fans come in uni-directional and reversible versions.
Are Wolter fans suitable for metro ventilation?
Yes. Wolter builds fans for longitudinal and transverse ventilation of tunnels and metros, and the standard AXV axial fans also suit metro stations, running tunnels and ancillary rooms.
How do tunnel jet fans differ from car-park jet fans?
Tunnel fans are built for the aggressive tunnel environment, with versions in stainless steels of various grades. For car parks Wolter makes a separate range of jet fans, including low-height models.
