Wolter axial fans

Axial fans move large air volumes at moderate pressure. The AXV/BXV series handles both everyday ventilation and smoke exhaust in car parks and buildings: the fire-rated F300 and F400 versions are tested to EN 12101-3.

Wolter axial fans

In an axial fan the air passes straight through the casing along the impeller axis. The design delivers high airflow from a compact unit and suits installation in a shaft, a wall or a straight duct run.

Wolter makes two groups of axial fans:

  • AXV / BXV — long- or short-cased fans with an IEC motor in the airstream. Impellers of 315–1600 mm, airflow from 1,000 to 200,000 m³/h, up to 1,500 Pa per stage. Two- and three-speed motors, F300 (60 and 120 min) and F400 (120 min) smoke-exhaust versions, explosion-proof and marine motors.
  • AEQ / ADQ / AER / ADR — compact fans with an external-rotor motor on a square mounting plate or in a round casing, sizes 250–630.

For car-park extract with redundancy Wolter offers the two-stage AXG; for tunnels, see tunnel fans.

Adjustable blade pitch

The AXV/BXV hub and blades are pressure-cast aluminium, and the blade pitch is set at standstill. The blade count is chosen from 3, 5, 6, 7, 10 and 14, with aluminium (AL) or plastic (PP) blades. This lets a single size be matched precisely to the design duty point.

F300 and F400 smoke exhaust

The AXV smoke exhaust versions are tested to EN 12101-3 and CE marked under Regulation (EU) 305/2011:

  • F300 — 300 °C for 60 or 120 minutes;
  • F400 — 400 °C for at least 120 minutes.

These fans use special certified motors. In fire mode the thermistor protection and the frequency inverter are bypassed — a manufacturer requirement the control scheme must allow for. All F300/F400 series are listed in Smoke exhaust fans.

Typical uses

  • car park ventilation and smoke extraction — exhaust and supply shafts working with jet (impulse) fans;
  • smoke exhaust and ventilation of plant rooms;
  • industrial axial fans for general and process ventilation of production halls and warehouses;
  • metro and tunnel ventilation — ancillary systems, stainless steel versions;
  • marine fans — versions with marine motors for ships and offshore sites.

What we need for a selection

Airflow, total system pressure, operating modes (one or two speeds, reversal), the required fire rating and the installation location. From this an engineer selects the diameter, blade count and pitch, the motor and the accessories — silencers, flexible connectors and anti-vibration mounts.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between AXV and BXV?

The type code: a BXV code also states the hub diameter, 150 or 250 mm (for example BXV-PP 450-5/25°). The manufacturer describes both series together: a casing with an IEC motor in the airstream and an adjustable-pitch impeller.

Can an axial fan run on a frequency inverter?

Yes, if the motor has thermistor protection; the speed must stay at or above 30 % of nominal. On F300/F400 fans the thermistors and the inverter are bypassed in fire mode.

How often should axial fans be inspected?

The manufacturer recommends an inspection every 12 months for general-purpose fans, every 6 months for F300/F400 fans that run daily and every 3 months for F300/F400 fans that only run in a fire.

Are F300 smoke-exhaust axial fans available for 60 minutes?

Yes. AXV is available in class F300 for 60 or 120 minutes and in class F400 for at least 120 minutes; the class and operating time are set by the fire protection design.

Are reversible axial fans available?

Yes, supply and exhaust fans can be built reversible on request — for example for car parks where the flow direction depends on the fire scenario.
