Purpose
Jet fans — also called impulse or thrust fans — are the core of a longitudinal ventilation scheme. Mounted in groups under the tunnel crown, they drive the air along the tunnel: in normal operation to dilute and remove exhaust gases, in a fire to control the movement of smoke. Reversible fans let the flow direction be chosen according to the fire location.
Fire rating and materials
The fans are certified to EN 12101-3 for operation at up to 400 °C for 120 minutes. For tunnel air with corrosive gases and abrasive particles Wolter uses stainless steels of various grades.
Selection
The number, thrust and positions of the fans come from a calculation and, for fire scenarios, usually from CFD modelling. We request the technical data for tunnel jet fans from the manufacturer for each project — send us the tunnel parameters.
For portals and ventilation shafts, see axial tunnel fans.
