Smoke exhaust fans

Wolter fans for smoke control systems, tested to the European standard EN 12101-3 for operation at 300 °C or 400 °C for 120 minutes.

The smoke exhaust fan is the main working component of a smoke control system. In a fire it must start on a signal from the controls and run for a defined time while moving hot gases. That is why these fans undergo fire testing, and their motor, bearings, impeller, casing and electrical connection are designed for high temperature.

Wolter offers smoke exhaust fans for every main scheme:

  • jet fans — for car parks, moving smoke along the level without ducts;
  • axial fans — for car park exhaust shafts, atria and plant rooms;
  • two-stage axial fans — for exhaust with redundancy and high pressure;
  • roof fans — for smoke exhaust through the roof;
  • tunnel fans — for longitudinal tunnel ventilation.

EN 12101-3 classes

EN 12101-3 classifies smoke exhaust fans by temperature and operating time. Wolter equipment uses two classes:

ClassTemperatureOperating timeTypical use
F300300 °C120 minCar parks and rooms with moderate design gas temperature
F400400 °C120 minUnderground car parks, tunnels, higher-risk buildings

The required class is set by the local codes and the fire protection design.

What to check when selecting

  1. Operating modes. Many fans run in two modes: daily ventilation and smoke exhaust. Two-speed motors save energy in normal operation.
  2. Location. A fan inside the served zone faces harsher conditions than one in a separate plant room.
  3. Power supply. Fire-rated cabling and a reliable supply are required. The isolator switch must match the temperature class.
  4. Frequency inverter. For F300/F400 fans the motor protections and the inverter are bypassed in fire mode, as the manufacturer requires. The control scheme must allow for this.
  5. Reversal. If the smoke direction depends on the fire location, choose reversible versions.

Documents

For smoke exhaust fans we provide technical data, EN 12101-3 test information and the conformity documents required in the country of delivery. We confirm the list for each item at selection.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Which smoke exhaust fan suits an underground car park?

Usually jet fans combined with axial exhaust fans rated F300 or F400. The series and sizes come from the calculation.

Can a smoke exhaust fan run on a frequency inverter?

Yes, in daily operation. In fire mode the inverter and protections are bypassed as the manufacturer specifies.

Are there roof-mounted smoke exhaust fans?

Yes, RVHT roof fans are rated for 400 °C for 120 minutes.
